Congratulations College Graduates!

Now it’s time to go out there and secure a place in today’s job market. The good news is according to NACE’s (The National Association of Colleges and Employers) Job Outlook Survey of 2013 employers are expected to hire 13 percent more college graduates this year as compared to last year.

Although this is good news, it doesn’t necessarily mean that finding the job you desire will be an easy task. It is still a tough market and employers continue to carefully select candidates with specific skills tailored for the needs of their company.

In order to secure your first job, you must begin by making sure you are doing all that you can to be the best person for the job. This includes avoiding some potential mistakes.

Here are a few tips and tricks to help you be the best person for the job:

First Impressions Matter.

Make a great first impression! This includes your appearance, so be sure and look professional and polished. Your behavior and language should reflect how you will interact with clients and colleagues. Use a firm handshake, eye contact, a positive disposition and clear decisive speech to project a great image.

Double Check Everything.

If you are connecting by email, proofread your application materials and emails thoroughly. Make sure you adhere to the rules of good writing. Written communication and correspondence can help you present yourself as a skillful professional.

Be Professional.

When communicating via phone or Skype, make sure you speak in a professional manner. Also be sure to avoid background noise or distractions.

Never miss an interview or scheduled phone call!  If you know you won’t be available, call ahead and reschedule or cancel.

When you have completed the potential employer’s interview process, thank the interviewer with a follow-up email or phone call.

Be Prepared.

Bring a current copy of your resume to the interview and at least 3 references. It is important to be prepared to submit this information again, if asked.

Do some investigating. Learn all you can about the employer. When you are well-informed about their recent business progress, you will demonstrate an interest in the company. The information you gathered will help you develop a few intelligent questions during your interviewed with the potential employer.

Be Smart with Social Media.

If they are active on social media you may want to like them on Facebook, follow them on Twitter and connect with them on LinkedIn. You should be aware of your own online presence and make sure you use good judgement. Purposefully think about what you share, post and tweet as these leave a long-lasting digital footprint. You may use  privacy settings to protect your own reputation. Your online presence should work for you, not against you! If it is not acceptable use the delete button and clean up what you can.

In today’s tough job market a degree helps but your presence and behavior can help you stand out as a well-rounded candidate.  This exhibit of positive attitude, manners and professionalism will help YOU be the employee worth hiring.
