N is for Why Doing NOTHING cab be Beneficial to Your Wellbeing

It is common knowledge, that not having any downtime or rest can be harmful to your physical and mental wellbeing. Especially when you fill your downtime with activities to make the most of your precious free time. All this activity may not be as beneficial as you think. Feeling like we need to be productive even with our “off” time can be harmful to your brain’s ability to rest.

The idea that we need to always be productive or we are wasting our time actually has the opposite effect. Being “too” productive can lead to physical and mental burnout. And whether this is in your personal or professional life, it can significantly impact all areas of your life.

Doing nothing seems counterintuitive to productivity. But many philosophers, spiritual leaders, and scientists have praised the act of doing nothing, including Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton! In addition, studies are now being shown that doing nothing can lead to creative insights, personal growth, and an overall healthier outlook.

Research has found that taking breaks can improve your mood, boost your performance and increase your ability to concentrate.

But doing nothing means just that. Do nothing. This includes binge-watching Netflix, scrolling social media, reading a book, or listening to a podcast. Even in our downtime, it can be challenging to truly do nothing. A simple walk without media or sitting in nature can be considered doing nothing. Folding your laundry or taking out the trash without headphones even counts. On the other hand, perhaps you find that taking relaxing baths or just staring into space can lead to great ideas. The trick is to turn off any focus and just let your mind wander.

It may be difficult to practice doing nothing at first, as we are hardwired to feel the need to entertain and be productive. But a simple night off of social media or a day out in nature without your headphones can make all the difference in your mental wellbeing.

So go ahead and give your mind a chance to pause and refresh! Doing so may be very beneficial to your overall health and happiness.
